Series4Episode10 on 26/03/2026 - 08:48 +4 In general, since going off-shore - ALL Westinghouse Fridges WILL let you down & probable be landfill within 4 yrs … sad thing is most brands are the same … my 1991 model Westinghouse, made in australia has had the thermostat replaced once & painted once & still serves as ,my main fridge! pavlos on 26/03/2026 - 09:09 +4 How's the energy efficiency? Series4Episode10 on 26/03/2026 - 09:58 +6 280 watts … live off-grid & can see the draw when it's the only thing running off the inverter, it's also quick to cool due to it's design of having the condenser coil on the back saving wattage as it runs far less … unlike the "Hot-Wall" boolsh!t they pump out now which will run constantly unless you have the minimum space around it, which precludes those units from being slide into cabinets made without that required space, & nobody tells buyers that when buying a new fridge for a tight cabinet made for fan cooled condenser unit, cabinets made before Hot-Wall designed refrigerators, buy the wrong fridge & it will run constantly! (worked in HVAC till retirement) I find Hot-Wall fridges to be a poor choice, even when sitting with good space or free standing … this fridge is a hot-wall unit. Nalar on 26/03/2026 - 15:33 Is every fridge 'hot-wall' now? Fridge manufacturing seems to have built in obsolescence these days! Series4Episode10 on 26/03/2026 - 18:18 @Nalar: Was just speaking to a guy I worked with & was going to ask if there's still models other than the sidewall condenser setup, he had to go before I could ask, I'm considering looking at what's on Hardly Normal's floor & picking the brain of a sales assistant. Trying to find out without asking the importer is not easy, it's not info they throw up on their websites, if you search for a model & add the term "Why are the sides hot" you'll confirm whether it is a "Hot-Wall" model. oatmatcha on 26/03/2026 - 09:27 +1 This has been my experience too. Mine failed at the four year mark. Customer service was absolutely useless and both offshore and onshore teams essentially denied the existence of ACL. Ended up getting it replaced. Replacement was faulty. Got that replaced within a fortnight or so of having it. Replacement #2 is going okay for now. Grew up with Westinghouses fridges being reliable. No longer the case. Exorcist on 26/03/2026 - 10:40 Comment score below threshold. Leviche on 26/03/2026 - 10:45 Not environmental friendly Series4Episode10 on 26/03/2026 - 10:53 +5 AFAIC the industry needs to be regulated, they freak out about refrigerants escaping into the environment & the state of landfill & allow utter garbage to be sold to us poor saps pandadude on 26/03/2026 - 11:01 +1 Fair question has to be asked what fridge is made in Australia now? Most things are built to be landfill. Even new Toyota Corolla you can't replace the head light bulb. sealed unit but you can replace the blinkers. Whatisthatvelvet on 26/03/2026 - 11:11 That's unreal. So you need to replace the whole headlight assembly? Mungulz on 26/03/2026 - 11:27 +2 They’re lifetime. They basically don’t fail unless crashed and have water ingress. Not exactly a downgrade. How many 2019 Corollas have you seen with a headlight out? I’ve not seen one. pandadude on 26/03/2026 - 11:53 +2 @Mungulz: There no such thing as lifetime. If you're going to say lifetime then please guarantee this product. Warranty is only 5 years, but people expect Toyota to last longer. It used to cost a few dollars to replace the blubs v a few thousand to replace the entire unit. Series4Episode10 on 26/03/2026 - 12:16 Nil White goods made in Australia! (except a few ovens) The idea of the "Sealed unit" was to lessen the chance of oils from fingers touching the glass bulb when replacing them (quick way to kill a incandescent globe) or contaminates causing premature failure of bulbs, sockets, reflector coatings etc, water & dirt was a big problem with lighting before that, but yeah, the cost is atrocious, luckily there's a decent quality after market sector to save you some $ RustyBBag on 26/03/2026 - 11:40 +2 Agree. I have a westinghouse stove and clock looses 1 minute a day. Lucille Bluth on 26/03/2026 - 12:16 I laughed at this. Megatron on 26/03/2026 - 11:50 Absolutely this.. they are not made the same.. I have a 13 year old Westinghouse that is still going strong. And then I bought a second westinghouse frinde in 2021, just outside of 2 year warranty it started leaking water.. had to pull the freezer section apart and found the design flaw, fixed it and it went back to leaking again few months later.. had to fix it again and now use it as an occasional fridge. Buy a good Fridge and save yourself the trouble.. F&P, Hitachi and Mitshi are the only one's I trust now.. if I were to buy a cheaper friday, I will probably opt for a Samsung rather. Series4Episode10 on 26/03/2026 - 12:24 Fisher & Pykel are now ordinary, would not buy their washing machines after being given one with a failed water pump … the pump is unique, hyper expensive & fitting a off the shelf pump took some doing as the pipe from the drum was WAF! regsofweb on 26/03/2026 - 12:40 +1 My Fisher & Pykel washing machine, the plastic frames cracked after 2 years. It's still running but don't know how long it will last Series4Episode10 on 26/03/2026 - 12:42 @regsofweb: Duct tape. Megatron on 26/03/2026 - 16:53 I knew their Washing Machines were of poor standard but Fridges, I have not heard anything bad. Washing machines, I have 3 Bosch front loaders, 1 German made and other 2 Thai made.. the Thai made one's have been going solid for 6 years now.. the German going strong for 2.5 years.. have never had any issues. Series4Episode10 on 26/03/2026 - 18:10 +1 @Megatron: Recent Fisher & Paykel fridges, particularly models with ice and water dispensers, are having reliability problems compared to their historically durable reputation. Customers service has declined, the serviceability is rubbish (hard to work on) & they are renowned for high noise levels … Hitachi make some good units & the service section is responsive Whatisthatvelvet on 26/03/2026 - 13:14 Think my 9 year old Westinghouse fridge has the same issue with the leaking. The freezer drip tray drain hole freezes up? I've just cleared mine for the second time in a month and have read that there's a part called a Drain Strap? "This is a small metal tab that hooks onto the defrost heater and sits inside the drain hole. It transfers heat directly into the hole to prevent a "plug" of ice from forming." - Gemini. Is this what you fitted @Megatron ? Megatron on 26/03/2026 - 13:21 Hi, yes similar issue but in my case the drain pipe right behind the freezer froze (not the hole itsel) and that caused the pipe to disconnect. I havent found a permanent fix and that is why we use it as an occassional fridge outside.. only turning it on for a few weeks when we need it during summers and then it gets turned off.. I guess there isnt enough time for the build up so havent had the issue since. Whatisthatvelvet on 26/03/2026 - 15:01 @Megatron: Ah ok thanks. Yeah the summer heat would thaw it out once turned off for sure. oatmatcha on 26/03/2026 - 20:43 Which retailer did you buy it from? Push them
